you need to check that audio is [Disable] in the BIOS, and this BIOS is tricky on these Asus boards, I have the Premium + Deluxe model.

as soon as comp boots press the <Del> key the Main menu opens

use right arrow key to select Advanced menu

down arrow to Onboard Device Configuration - press Enter key

if AC97 is [Enabled] use down arrow key to select - and use + key to change to [Disabled]

press F10 key to Save & Exit

y key to accept changes

XP will load

instal sound card driver again

don't forget the Restore Point

if at any time you need to return to the previous menu press the ESC key
