OK.... some good news!
After struggling to fix this ("no audio device") for weeks (on and off), I DID IT!
Struggling - in other words - using all the tips in this and all the other threads.
And, funnily, I did it via Intel's web site.
(Coincidentally, I am an Intel employee... :-)
How I did it?
Firstly - reinstalled Windows XP without any audio drivers.
Visited Intel's site (support and downloads) with the motherboard details and downloaded the chipset, graphics and LAN drivers.
Then installed the chipset driver then rebooted.
Then installed the graphics and LAN drivers and rebooted.
Checked that all was working OK including LAN/Internet.
THEN (and this is the important part which failed always before):
In the "Search Support & Downloads", enter "No Audio Device".
Click on #3: "Desktop Boards - Troubleshooting audio issues"
Scroll down to "Where to Find the Latest Audio Drivers" and click on "Intel® Driver Update Utility".
Click on "Check your system for the latest driver".
I then downloaded the latest driver and installed it. Reboot.
Voila!
(My wife was about to insist that we bring in a technician to fix the problem... how embarrassing...)
