external, optical CD/DVD drive disappers and has to be reinstalled

I have CD-ROM DVD-ROM usb slim portable optical drive, which is supposed to be a plug and play device.I connected it with my Samsung NC 10 netbook (Windows XP) .My drive is generic and I do not know who is the manufacturer.
After I connected the drive to my computer I could not find it in "my computer".
When I accessed a Device Manager I found a yellow exclamation mark
next to "USB mass storage device".I uninstalled this device, unplugged and plugged again the external drive.I received the message that a new hardware was found and that I should reboot the computer, which I did and I was able to play the DVD.
However doing it each time when I want to use the drive is very annoying.
Any suggestions what could I do about this problem.I wish to add that the drive came with a small disc(USB 2.0 driver) but trying to use it did not remedy the problem.
I appreciate your help.
