You may want to try starting in SAFE mode. This keeps all background programs from running (like virus detection).

You may also want to try and shut down some programs that automatically start up when pc boots up. At Start button, select Run and then type msconfig and hit enter or ok. Go to startup tab and unclick anything you recognize as not needed. Some office programs or other games, seldom used programs can be unchecked.
