I'd just go for the recovery, if you continue to be really apprehensive I doubt you'll fix the problem. It is very hard to lose data on a hard drive (provided you don't accidentally format it), save physical disk damage.
Did you try ace utilities; any luck? And what problems did you have with Nero, i've found it the best burning program if ever used (I have v5.5).
You wouldn't have to reinstall SP1 if you used recovery console.
