not knowing which model HP you have, go to the bios, F1 for HP. once there look for the I/O configuration, should be on the advanced menu, see what the lpt port is set to, ecp, epp, or bi directional, try each one untill you get the right one. some of the newer models have a ecp/epp option that allows both, if this is the case on the one you have, try it first.
