this is a for what it's worth post.
i worked on a emachine 2 days ago, system spec, 1 gig celeron, 384 sdram, 30 seagate hd, samsung cdrw,....basic system with xp home. they have had the machine for two years used the system restore cd several times to recover. they bring it to me because of the same problem as the orriginal post(carbon copy of the problem) i tried the restore disk, a norton ghost restore set provided by emachines, wouldnt boot, would freeze the system even in the bios, tested every piece of hardware which were all fine, secure erased the hard drive tried again, same result. secure erased again and installed a copy of xp pro, everything was fine, updated it, works perfect. thinking this was a odd event, i drop in the restore disk and try again, problem came back. ended up, put pro back on, installed the programs that they wanted from the software bundle from different source disk and the machine is fine. after much searching and finding no info on the matter i can only assume that being the owner updated the bios, and the restore cd has drivers and settings pre packaged, there has to be a conflict. a clean install accounts for these changes and a ghost or drive image does not.
