- Do you have the BIOS Auto detect the HDs ? if so go to BIOS and change that to manual select.
- Set the second hard drive to secondary master or secondary slave and try it again.
- swap the connect cable from the mobo end (keep the IDE cable connect to the hard drive just the way they are and swap the IDE connectors on MOBO end)
- Is there any chance of making a mistake with IDE 0 and IDE 1 and having them reversed ?
- Do you have the UDMA turned on in BIOS?

Let us know how you make out with the beast

cheers

Snowmonkey,
Thanks for the reply, here is what I have:
1) yes on the 80 wire ATA cables for both primary and secondary channels
2) BIOS is set to auto detect for all 4 drives (both channels - both master and slave)
3) as both HD were on primary channel, I did not switch them but was getting close to trying that
4) BINGO - I did not see the HDD0 (it was on the second screen), so I had HDD1 - which turned out to be the primary slave!
5) UDMA Mode is set to AUTO

the HDD0 is what got me - but for good measure someone else had suggested disable "other boot device" which I also did - it i sall working now! Again thanks - many thanks
