To try the easiest thing first, shut down the Indexing service...which can sometimes cause the problem you're having accessing a folder with a lot of relatively large files in it.

To shut down Indexing, go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services, scroll down to and double click on Indexing Service. Set it to "Disabled" in "Startup type" and click on the 'Stop" button to stop it without have to reboot. Click OK.

Try accessing the music folder again and see if that clears up the problem.

I turn off the Indexing Service on all the XP systems I maintain and have never encountered a problem with it.
