Renaming is the same as removing, except that by renaming, the file is still in its correct folder and available to be put back merely by renaming it back to the original name. Yes, you can delete it and leave it in the recycle bin until you are sure you don't need to restore it but it's real easy to forget that and empty the recycle bin and then realize you need to restore the file or files.

An integrated sound "card" (part of the motherboard) works essentially the same way as a PCI card. The motherboard requires drivers. Then both an integrated sound and a separate sound card, whichever you have, require their own drivers.

If it is an integrated "card," it certainly possible it's gone bad. In which case, a good PCI sound card can be bought for as little as $20 (or as much as hundreds), the onboard sound disabled in the BIOS, the new card installed and its drivers installed and it'll be good to go.

I had no idea what had and had not been tried nor what had or had not been decided so I offered my best shot in the dark.

I do not hand out my home address to strangers in real life nor do I hand out my email address to strangers on the internet. It is regrettable that Brutus has taken offense at that.

Okay, now I'm done. Good luck with it.
