ok, did the defrag problem happen out of the blue or did you install something just before the problem started, update anything? add new hardware? do you have any programs like easy cd creator 5, go back, any kind of backup utilities just installed?
try this, turn the computer off. when you hit the power button to turn it back on tap the F8 key constantly untill the boot options screen comes up, select safe mode. once it boots up try to defrag in safe mode and if it works it is a software problem....you have something starting up with windows that is causing it. this could be a driver for hardware(have you updated lately?) or spyware or even a virus, a good on-line scan at panda or trend is a good thing to do just to make sure(even if you have the very best anti virus software) nothing is fool proof. adaware or spybot, when updated usually find 98% of problems with spyware.
