Post Mapped network drive not allowing long file names.

I have a mapped network drive which is suddenly not allowing me to enter a file name over 8 characters. I'm using windows XP, it should and always has allowed long file names. When trying to copy a file with a long file name to this drive, I get a message saying "The drive that this file or folder is stored on does not allow long file names, or names containing blanks or any of the following characters:\/:,;*?"<>|"
....however this is simply not true. Has anyone had this problem before and can tell me what's going on?
