If I were to guess the casue of all you troubels I would look at your RAM.
You said you have a stick of 64 and a stick of 256.

They are probably two differnet types of RAM. Pull the 64 out and run Windows to see how that goes.

If there are 2 different types/kinds of RAM in the System it can corrupt files; then Windows File Protection can appear.
