Computer Freezes randomly... help? Please?

Hello, Im hoping someone can give me some insight as to what the hell is wrong with my computer...

I have an AMD duron 1.2 gig with 256 ram running 98SE, and 2 hard drives, 30gig and 60gig. It's worked beautifully for a good couple of years but recently it's started freaking out.

The most common symptom is Ill switch it on and although I can hear the hard drives etc starting up, the system just won't boot up at all, the screen doesn't even come on. Ill press reset a couple of times or switch it on and off and eventually it comes right. Other times it will boot up fine, but a couple of minutes afterwards it will just randomly freeze up completely - mouse, sound, keyboard, the lot.

I originally thought the problem was with my slave hard drive, because it only ever seemed to do it when I had the drive plugged in. However I've since discovered that it still does it even when the drive is unplugged. More recently I've found that if I take out the ram card then put it back in the system seems to work, but this may just be coincidence.

Ive been looking around on the net and it seems that faulty RAM can cause this problem, but when the system IS working, I've never seen any ram errors, and I use the computer for music composition so I use the ram pretty intensively.

Can anybody help me?
