You're going about it the hard way. Since you have a router, you don't need to use Internet Connection Sharing, the router will take care of that.
Connect the modem to the router (refer to the router's manual as to which port to connect it to). Connect both computers to the router. Configure the router (again, refer to the router's manual) to connect to the net through the modem.
Both computers will then be able to access the net through the router independently and, if you want, access each other's files.
