Protect yourself online

A basic guide to stuff you can use that will give you allmost complete peace of mind.
All files are free.

Spywareblaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/downloads.html
Keep spyware from installing in the first place!
you'll be secured by the most powerful anti-spyware protection solution anywhere

A replacement Hosts File: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
You can use a HOSTS file to block ads, banners, cookies, web bugs, and even most hijackers.

Spybot S&D:
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Spyware remover that Includes "teatimer" background protection and a system "immunize" function.

free Adaware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
A partner to Spybot. Never depend on a single app to do the job.

If you feel confident...
The proxomitron: http://www.proxomitron.info/
A web filter that allows you to remove components of your surfing experience. Spoof your browser, OS, (be a mac user!) remove harmfull or speed reducing features of the net.

Using these, you can't go wrong. I would be surprised if you got any nasties while these are in use. Though none of the above will prove usefull long term, unless you keep them updated.

Obviously, an anti virus product. Your choice.

Firewall: I use Zonealarm. Again, personal preference.

XP SP2. Not perfect by a long shot, but the best M$ has to offer.
Don't depend on it's firewall though. It's pretty useless.

You could try Firefox browser, but I found it basic compared to more established browsers based on IE. Maxthon is my favourite here.

Happy surfing!
