Your computer cannot run correctly with only 10mb of disk space available. That is why it locked up. It is very likely that it automatically ran Disk Cleanup to recover some disk space, or it would not be able to run correctly. It would not have compressed or deleted files other than those in the recycle bin, temporary files (internet or otherwise) etc.
To ensure it doesn't happen again, try to keep more disk space free or replace your drive with one of a larger capacity.
