How do I add Ethernet connected Printer?

My system config:
New Dimension 8400
Bios: Dell A05
Windows XP Pro, Ver 5.1.2600, Service Pack 2.0
Pentium 4, 3.0 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB HD

I have an HP color Laserjet 4500N postscript printer connected by a crossover ethernet cable. Usually its plugged into a MAC and works fine.

I plugged the cable into my PC:
when the printer is powered off Windows thinks that the network cable is unplugged. When I power up printer the status is first given as acquiring network address. It then says "Limited or no connectivity" and since its just a printer I guess "limited" makes sense.
I downloaded driver from HP for XP which went into a folder and unzipped itself. However, no Wizard appeared.
I then went to control panel and tried to "add a printer" with local option auto detect (plug'n'play) approach, but it couldn't find printer and the only manual options available were for LPT1, etc. The wizard had said that for a printer on a net that was NOT attached to a computer one should use to local option. If I try via the printer networked via another computer this seems to be incorrect as one would expect.

What do I do to make system see my printer and to install driver?

thanks
