To my knowledge, the Repair folder of Windows XP contains the registry hives saved after the first successfull startup of the operating system. However at that time your additional software (Roxio CD, MS Office, etc.) may not of have been installed so restoring those settings would not restore the additional registry settings for these applications, this in turn causing your current problems (many software applications won't run if they do not have the necessary registry entries). As for the problems with Media Player and Internet Explorer, although they were installed with the operating system, they might have been modified by upgrades and/or patches and need newer/modified registry entries which are not compatible with the ones that you restored.
