Thanks for your response. I ran an AVG scan, an Adaware scan and an MS Spyware scan, and they all turned up negative. The startup programs listed in msconfig are (as far as I can tell) all legit. I did think it might be something to do with the startup when I first got the problem, but I ran a diagnostic setup from msconfig and the problem still occurred (with the sound that is - I can't actually remember if svchost had a problem).
