It sounds like your network was using ICS
Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) enables a Windows computer to share its Internet connection with computers on local area networks. It's been around since Windows 98 SE, and with the launch of Windows XP, it's only gotten better.
But now, with the router installation you want your netork configured differently.
Your network has a LAN (local side -View workgroup computer) and a WAN for INET access. The DSL Router connects to the Internet, unlike ICS, where the PC directly connects.
Also with XP your machines may have been configred with Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall, that prevents unwanted attacts. However, its not to be used with a router becuase the router setups its own firewall.
Therefore, each machine in the LAN must be configured for the LAN access, not ISC and not ICF. Sometimes friggin around with the Network setup in XP causes problems. I suggest you look at this website
