Software, Hardware, I don't know!

This being my first post I would like to say hello to everybody and thanks in advance for considering my issue.

I'm using Windows XP MCE 2002 SP2 on a HP Pavilion PC with 2GB RAM and a 3.2 GHz PIV. This setup worked fine for months and I really didn't change anything worth mentioning on the hardware-side.

Problem is: My PC boots only every second time. I.e. when I'm using the system (everything just fine), log out using the 'restart" option XP will shutdown orderly but instead of rebooting I only get a blank screen and some minor HD activity. When switching off and on again everything will boot up just nicely. There are no bootmanagers or other OS's installed.

I think this might have come up after my fiddling with the hibernating feature. I've read there might be an issue with machines that have a lot of RAM. Fiddling again with hibernating, switching it off and on again doesn't really help!

Any ideas?

(Sorry for my english ...)
