stumped.. xp boot problem

Hey guys,
im brand now here and im really not bad at all with computers. The computer starts up the dell thing comes up and after that the windows loading screen would come up but it doesnt start windows i get this screen

"we are sorry for any inconvenience but windows did not start successfully this may be due to a recent hardware or software change

If your computer stopped responding or restarted unexpectedly or was shot off to protect your files and folders chose 'Last known good configuratiion'
If startup was interupted due to a power failure or you dont know start windows up in normal mode"

the options i have to start are safe, safe with networking, safe with command prompt or Last known good configuration.

I have tried a lot of things. i tried in safe and it looked like it started up. there was the arrow for the mouse and it was able to move, and it said safe mode in all the corners but a few seconds later it said it couldnt start because of an error in comct32.dll

Now i was like no big deal ill put it as slave in my computer. the harddrive wasnt detected. i have an sata in my computer and this was ide i plugged it into the mobo on slave but it didnt work. so i took another hd running xp pro sp2 from another computer. plugged it into the original and put the original hd on slave. that didnt work either the same thing happened.

so i thought to take out the original hard drive. This is where this gets real weird. after i took it out the computer still got the same exact message. on a different perfectly fine working hard drive. then i tried to start in safe mode with the good working hd, and it started to load safe mode and didnt even load up all the way. on the bottom of the screen it said "loading d347bus.sys" then it reboots.

This makes me think that it is a hardware or software problem.. but everything seems to be working fine, the comptuer starts theres picture. the only thing that i can say about maybe a change would be that: the persons who's computer this is said that they clicked a windows update message that said they needed to restart their computer now. this is when this started to happen.

I am stumped and cant reformat or reinstall xp. Please guys any help would be great.

Thanks in advance
Mike
