If you are running Windows XP, IE 6 can not be removed. This is because it is very tightly integrated with the Windows OS. When you update IE through Windows Update with patches and Service Packs, you are not just updating IE. You are updating Windows.

You can use Firefox, Netscape, Opera for alternative browsers. But you will still need to use IE to run Windows Update to get the needed patches and service packs. (Try to check at least twice a month for Windows Updates. At least once a month if you can.) You can also set up Automatic Windows Update for to install and/or update at a time that YOU pick. However, if you are only on a dial up connection these updates can take a LONG time, especially if you haven't run Windows Update before.

Dial up users still on original XP or XP-SP 1 should order Windows XP SP-2 from Micrososft on CD ROM because the upgrade is much too extensive for a dial-up connection. Make sure you read the prerequistes for installing SP-2 before doing so. Clean out your history/temp files. Update/run your AV program as well as get and update your Adware Removal/Spyware Removal program. SP-2 HATES SPYWARE! After you get SP-2 installed, run Windows Update. Make sure to run updates and do scans with your adware removal and spyware removal programs on a regular basis. (Weekly if you can.)

You still need the Windows Update patches along with your weekly (at least) AV updates, and a good Spyware removal and Adware Removal program. Two of the best are SPYBOT: SEARCH & DESTROY and ADAWARE SE: Microsoft also has an excellent Anti-Soyware Program called ANTI-SPYWARE BETA These programs and Windows Update will help you protect your computer. You need all of this protection.
