My problem is that it is not automatically recognised on boot and it's a major source of irritation that I have to unplug it from the USB Hub and then plug it back in again every time I boot so that I can see it.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I do not think that Windows recognises external USB HD drives on boot. I have an external HD in a caddy, which if I need I switch on after the Windows boot.
