The live cds with install option are terrific. You can try them out and then easily install them if you wish. You get most everything you need and more on one cd.

My current favourite is PClinuxOS. Its a Mandriva offspring with improvements like Synaptic for software management. This is the only distro that fully supports my obscure mouse. It has a great selection of software and updating has been error free.

Mepis, Kanotix, Knoppix, and Blag are very nice too. If you have a Nvidia or Ati video card Mepis gives you the driver right out of the box.

alinux is very nice too if you want if all for multimedia but it is more complicated to install and setup.
