XP Pro 64 or Vista

At the moment I'm running an AMD Athlon Xp 1800+ with XP Pro+SP2.

I'm thinking of building a complete new system based around an AMD Athlon 64 (would like dual core but think it will be too expensive). There isn't any urgency. I will start buying parts in over the next few months but I probably won't start the actual build until after the end of the year.

I will need to buy a new OS to gain the benefit of the 64 BIT structure but I'm not sure if it would be best to buy XP Pro 64 Bit when I start the build or wait until Vista comes on the market and start my build then.

Alternatively, should I stick with XP Pro for the time being and upgrade as and when necessary?

Any views much appreciated.
