I'm having a similar problem. I was planning on installing Ubuntu on my bootleg windows XP laptop so I bought an external harddrive, I moved almost all of my music onto the hard drive and most of my documents. I thought Ubuntu would be easier than it was and now realize I probably did something to fuck up the partition on my external hard drive. Windows no longer recognizes it, it says the drivers are okay and the drive is recognized but it doesn't show up on the my computer screen and I can't access it through typing E:\ either. I also can't partition my harddrive, which is nonsense.
