XP refuses to FTP

For some inexplicable reason, our desktop PC, running XP, does not respond to anything regarding FTP. We cannot receive downloads re our security programs, and we cannot update our website. Regardless of the application, a real FTP program, or one that has FTP built in (webcam programs), nothing is going to the servers. All we get are errors like "cannot access server", or somthing about the password or userID. I can tell you this: there is NOTHING wrong with the password and userID. I have checked and rechecked it far too many times. So, where does one look? I doubt it has anything to do with the router, since my laptop can execute FTP perfectly. By-passing the router, while using the affected desktop, does no good either. I've reset both the modem and router many times, to no avail. I am this close " " to throwing in the towel and taking it to a shop. God, I hate doing that!!! Anyone out there have any ideas as to where to start looking for a fix? BTW: FTP used to work on the affected machine. Can't find a reason why it would quit. Hope someone can help. Thanks, Delta.Orion.
