OK, well first the size of the picture is determined by it's pixel width and height. When you select your background (in Desktop Properties and the Desktop tab) and look on your right you'll have a drop-down box with the option for either "Tile", "Center" or "Stretch". The option tends to be "Stretch", change it to "Center" to make it look like the actual image. Most displays nowadays are 1024x768, if you're image is the same size it will work perfectly even in "Stretch". If the image is smaller than that only "Center" will help.
