Logitech QuickCam (question from newbie)

Hi Folks,

I need a bit of advice. I have just installed a Logitech QuickCam sphere to my desktop PC downstairs. My father occupies this room and is bedridden through ill health. The cam is trained on his bed.

I have another desktop PC in the bedroom upstairs. I wish to access live video from the Logitech QuickCam from the bedroom PC.

The objective here is to give me piece of mind that my father is OK downstairs while I work on the computer upstairs.

I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to setting up webcams...etc.

Can anyone please advise me how I get the bedroom PC to communicate with the live video downstairs. I have run the software disk on both PC's. Do I have to use Windows messenger and if so how do I install this.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Regards.

Satfanni.

This is only a suggestion Satfanni, however, webcam's usually connect to your puter via USB.

Surely, in theory, anyway, you should be able to obtain a very long connection lead that will go from the USB connector at the end of the webcam, to the USB socket at the back of your puter upstairs. This would also bypass the puter downstairs.

Hope that made sense.

As I said, it's only a suggestion.

Good luck though...................

there are many software programs, freeware or shareware that are good for what you ask. my advice would be: (if both computers are on the net) add a yahoo messenger to both computers and make up a user name for the one in the bedroom, give that name to no one. on yours, make you name and add the other computer's yahoo account name to the friends list. on the bedroom computer, start yahoo and open a message box to your name and start the web-cam. leave it on from there, just minimize the screen.
if you just have a home network with no internet connection, use netmeeting it is step by step on how to use it when you load the progam...if you have windows ME or above you already have netmeeting, may have to go to your C: drive>program files folder>netmeeting, to find it but you can make a shortcut.

Thanks for replies guys. Your suggestions are much appreciated. I'll have to give this some thought.

Is Yahoo messenger the same as windows messenger? I tried to set this up using windows messenger and using different accounts but no go.

Regards.

Windows Messenger v 6.02 is 'similar' to Yahoo Messenger.

However, please don't confuse it with the unnecessary M$ Service 'Messenger'.

It's original purpose was to transmit net send and Alerter service messages between clients and servers. Nowadays, it can be very intrusive with a sole purpose to send you messages iro porn, etcetera. If you still have this Service on either Manual or Automatic, please see the following link, in order to disable it: -

Shoot The Messenger

PTO's recommendation should have worked. Check your Firewall, as it may be blocking a necessary port.

Good luck.............
