i used to use trillian and a few others so i could have the "one for all messenger" now aol, yahoo and msn constantly patch so third party software does not work. aim crashed constantly on trillian. others were buggy, then would stop working, get a new version.....works for a while then quits.
i had some lose my friends list, merge them with unrelated chat programs....i gave up on the idea of using a multi messenger, paltalk even had yahoo, msn, and aim for a while, they dropped that like a bad habit.
things like msn messenger plus seem cool until you discover spyware or keyloggers in them, smiley faces add-ons are bad about being the same thing....some are safe.

i have tried alot of stuff when it comes to chat and messengers even clients like yazak, ymlite, yahoo elite........i even know how to actually cloak a yahoo messenger with Y!Tunnel...

Send a message via AIM to sock+_man
Thats what i use and its very good. One thing i found about messenger2 was that i had to add my contacts again so i didn't bother using it.
Whereas gaim keeps all your contacts and settings and stuff. An addon for msn is messenger plus Messenger plus Which is also quite good
