job search

Hey all. I'm a university student in search of a job. A job in software that is. And thing is, I don't feel like going for flat rate or salary; I'm searching for piecework. I've got basic knowledge of Java, JavaScript and XML. And thing is, I have no idea about the current situation on the job market in that area. Would it be better for me to work for a company, or try to search for clients myself? Where are there more opportunities these days, software or web development? What languages are the best in terms of opportunities? Could someone fill me in? Thanks for your time y'all.
