Post Divx 5 Released

DivX is a form of video compression, indeed it is one of the best if not the best. Divx5 was released on monday 4th of March and seems to be extremely powerful. Divx is widely used for compressing DVDs. In previous versions it has been possible to compress to high levels with reasonable quality however divx 5 has some significant improvments. If it is used properly by an expert it is possible to reduce the filesize by around 41% of a previous version while still being of the same quality.
Indeed after my preliminary exprerements (I only got it last night) I have compressed 1 minute of DVD into 7.5MB including 320KBps MP3 sound track. The quality is extremely high, comparable to VHS and perfectly watchable. Using this compression rate I could get a 1h 30min DVD onto a single writable CD! This file size was reached after hardly any tweaking and i have not even looked at advanced settings, I would imagine that the size could be reduced by 10-20% further.

Speed has been vastly improved and running at maximum quality encode, ie lowest speed I am getting 10fps. However if less compression is used it has been reported that one of the creators gets 75fps on his dual AMD Athlon XP 2000+

There are 2 versions, the free one which allows encoding and playback. The other version is the pro version, this allows advancd encoding options saving up to 25% of the file size. This will cost $30 however there will also be an add suipported version available for free.

DIVX rules

Hey dude, I work/co-own www.bswebdesign.net and I dig this forum, finally someone who likes video/movies!

Divx is my saving grace, because I do big time video editing as a job aside from school and the website. Ive found divx to be amazing for sharing and presenting some of my material. I was thrilled about divx 5 as well, after being a big user of 4. Maybe you could help me though, I used 4 and it gave me no trouble in Adobe Premiere when I encoded avi's however, the new version of 5 will corrupt my premiere program and say that its time to register my divx program (after i encode one project) and I can no longer use the codec, much less my premiere movie program because activation for divx 5 ran out, regardless of the 30 days, even it was the first day. Hmmmm oh well....

DIVX rocks. I am also a big VCD fan however, ive been through a lot of DVD players that support VCDs but dont support CD-R's. And Ive found most of these monstrocities to be Sonys! But whenever I get a chance, my friend has cd r vcd supporting player and a HDTV, so i check out some of my stuff over there. Im recently uploading a lot of my DIVX content on to me and my buds website. www.bswebdesign.net
And if i could get the right encoders, then i could do SUPER VCDs that support mpeg 2, dvd quality, much better than normal vcds, now thats awesome.

We dont get many posts, but maybe you can post there, and ill certainly post here. I have a big interest in Video so if you got anything to say, please go to our forums and post to me. Id appreciate it a lot.

Anyways hey check out some of my DIVX material and movie ideas. It helps out with quality/file size ration, but it still might take a while if you dont have broadband with the 7 meg files at tv resolution. the website for the divx content is

www.bswebdesign.net/drew/

eventually ill have a ton of projects on here, serious, and not so serious. if anyones interested or would like to chat about movie making check out www.bswebdesign.net and contact me "ScrewyDrewy" or post in the forums. or email me at drew@bswebdesign.net

see ya
