Moved On

Just like to say ive moved onto Linux. I kno i kno what the hell am i thinking but hey its pretty cool. ill of course still be using windows for stuff like dvd burning but that's mostly it. windows has been fun but now its time to say goodbye! :'(

Take my hat off to you dude!

It's something i'll be looking in to at a later date. It's just a case of finding an easy distro to use.

I'm with you xcrunner.

I rarely use windows anymore.

Linux has progressed to the state of replacing windows for the ordinary computer user.

And guess what people? Linux dosn't cost a dime unless you factor in the cost of bandwidth to download it.

yeah its really hard to get used to when uve been w/ windows for a wihle. you get used to the WINDOWS folder and the Program Files folder, but in Linux is all changed around. they do have a cmd liek thing called "Terminal". All the distros ive tried so far are pretty easy to use its just a matter of orientation with files and folders. my fav is SuSE

yeah linux has gotten really far but the only bad thing is lack of software.... there is WINE, but it doesnt run everything. And linux doesnt cost a dime unless u want something like Linspire...

Linux certainly does not have the selection of software that is available for windows. I have not had a problem for my needs.

I might have to download some form of Linux and have a play now. Which free distro would you guys recommend for a complete newbie?

The live cds with install option are terrific. You can try them out and then easily install them if you wish. You get most everything you need and more on one cd.

My current favourite is PClinuxOS. Its a Mandriva offspring with improvements like Synaptic for software management. This is the only distro that fully supports my obscure mouse. It has a great selection of software and updating has been error free.

Mepis, Kanotix, Knoppix, and Blag are very nice too. If you have a Nvidia or Ati video card Mepis gives you the driver right out of the box.

alinux is very nice too if you want if all for multimedia but it is more complicated to install and setup.

you shuold try to get your hands on knoppix somehow. its a live cd that u dont need to install at all and u can have the whole linux experience. you should have an extra HD for installing linux just in case something bad happens u still got msoft as a backup. you should try SuSE as an installation OS or mayb Mandrake. Funny how we're talking about linux at a Windows XP forum...

Sorry to take so long to reply.... I tried creating a partition to install mandriva on but my notebook took exception and replied with the dreaded BSOD

Then my XP-Pro disk wouldn't work so I've had to go back to the basic XP install.

Anyway... I've downloaded and tried Knoppix and quickly went on to download Ubuntu but it refuses to recognise my CD-Drive.

Does anyone know a way around this? (maybe i needed a new thread)
