The word NOOB

Why is it, that we as humans find it necessary to isolate and demean inexperienced people by labelling them with deragotory terms such as the one in the title?

Is there a gestation period for a noob, where after a certain time you emerge an ex-noob or do you have to preform some death defying feat like licking the inside of uncle bobs false teeth after a big lunch?

I was just curious and hope this doesnt offend anyone by me asking this question.

The word noob has, as has most name calling, much more to do with the caller, than the callee.

The thing about calling people you've never actually met of course, is that it's absolutely entirely about you, and nothing at all whatsoever to do with them.

Of course it also helps to hack their hotmail and yahoo accounts and send nasty messages to all their friends, to make yourself feel better.

I understood 'noob' derives from 'newbie', meaning someone new to this enviroment. How can that be derogative? I have described myself as a noob when the situation arises.

I would imagine any form of name calling is exactly how Ant put it "Done to make the caller feel better about themselves"
I cant see how any name calling isn't derogative...and just because you call it (or say you call it) to yourself doesn't make it right....this is only my humble opinion

IMHO it is not name calling but rather a 'categorising'. This doesn't automatically imply anything derogative.

ahhhh i see how silly of me. Thanks for pointing out that all these years of me experiencing and witnessing, what i thought to be name calling, was actually categorising
I wonder how many others fall into the red headed, four eyed, freckle faced fat bastard category like i did for so many years.

Categorising someone as 'new' is hardly the same thing now is it?
