Personally, I would not buy a brand name computer. If I was to buy a ready- made computer tomorrow, it would be from a small shop with the components I specify.

Build your own !!

That way you get the specification you want and with component manufacturers warranties.

If you can wire a mains plug onto a table lamp you can build a PC.

Go for it.

I have no intentions of buying a ready-made computer at all. I would most certainly build my own. I am looking at a system with the 2500 Barton cpu with a Abit NF7 nforce board.

I can understand 'New Users' buying off the shelf systems from one of the big manufacturers.

Here in the UK there are ads in the newspapers every day trying to sell PCs.

For 'New Users' they can be good buys - a decent spec system with loads of extras such as web cams & printers and tons of last years must have software.

You've got that right. Old software, celerons, durons, extras like printers and scanners that are garbage models. Here in Canada, Compac is a popular make for back-to-school sales.

i would agree on putting together your own computer is best thing to do. but i had a run in with all the above off the shelf computers and of all of them Dell would be the number one choice.
hp and compaq are the same thing, they crash too often and don't worth what you pay for. acer is just outdated. Mac - who buys macs anyway - schools and noobs.

dell- the lesser of two evils

oh wait you don't have dell on there ...oops

I think it depends on the buyers needs and wants. If a person is prone to migranes, maybe having a service plan is just what the doctor ordered. When anyone asks me, I tell them to get a Dell. Best customer service. Period.

But, for the person who takes pride in the fact that they change their own oil, or likes finding out how things tick, I say build your own. It's a pretty cool feeling when you get your box together, it POSTs on the first power up, and when you install the OS it blows the doors off your last computer. You gotta love it.
