Sound card driver not working :(

Since yesturday, my sound card has stopped working. When i go to the volume control, a message appears:

"There are no active mixers available"

However i have not touched any of my system files or uninstalled anything for weeks.

For some strange reason the sounds i applied ages ago for the start sound still works when i log on!

When i go to open a music file it says that the hardware/drivers are not working....but they are damn it!!!!

P.S my ass of a dad lost my driver disks

go to the device manager, right click the sound devices, remove them. reboot and it should reinstall the drivers. could just be a odd conflict, the fix above should get it going again.
