99% of dell printers are lexmark, your i think is a Lexmark Z615.
try the drivers on this link, should fix you up.

For reasons best known to themselves you cannot fit Lexmark cartridges into a Dell Printer. If you press programmes then select Dell 720, one of the options is order Dell cartridges, or they are available from Dell online. They are not the cheapest items to purchase so I got bottles of refill ink and have had no problems. You can get the instructions for opening and filling the cartridges by e-mailing www.jr-inkjet.com. If you live in the States, www.atlanticinkjet.com have some of the best prices I've seen for refill ink, I had some sent to the UK and after courier delivery and import taxes, it was still 50% cheaper than getting it here.

This I just got from hp customer support less than two hours ago, and it worked, just went and bough a USB cable and follow the instructions for installation, it worked for me and I was using a parallel cable before, did not have to update drivers.

Here is hp supports reply today; Nov 9, 2004

Dear Douglas,

Thank you for writing back.

The problem of printing strange characters is due to corrupted printer
port or the bad parallel cable.

I recommend you to once again reinstall the parallel port and if the
issue persists, please connect the printer to the computer using USB
cable and try printing.

====Steps to Refresh the parallel port====

1. Close all applications and programs.
2. Click Start, "Turn Off Computer" and then "Restart". Wait for the
computer to restart.
3. Click Start and then Control Panel.
4. Double-click the System icon.
5. Click the Hardware tab.
6. Click "Device Manager".
7. Click the plus(+) sign to the left of "Ports (COM or LPT)".
8. Select "Printer Port (LPT1)".
9. Click Uninstall.

CAUTION: If a message prompting you to restart your computer is
displayed, Do NOT restart your computer.

10. Close the Device Manager window by clicking the "X" in the top
right corner of that window.
11. Click Start, click "Turn Off Computer", then click "Turn Off".

NOTE: Ensure that the Turn Off option is selected, instead of the
Restart option.

12. Wait for a few seconds and restart the computer.
13. When the computer restarts, a "Windows has detected new or added
hardware", message will be displayed.
14. Click "Yes" or "OK" to allow your computer to detect your ports.
It may take several minutes.

NOTE: You will have to insert the Windows CD-ROM into the
CD drive, if prompted.

To verify that the "Printer Port" has been installed, repeat Steps 3
through 7 to get back to your Ports settings within the Device Manager.

If the issue persists, switch to USB cable and try printing.

If you need further assistance, please reply to this message and we will
be happy to assist you further.

This company has remanufactured Dell ink cartridges in the UK - www.cartridgesave.co.uk/find-cartridge/Dell.html

As far as I know, the Dells are Lexmark carts with a different cap on the top. If this is the case, Lexmark filling instructions will work on your original Dell carts.

I tried the above link, but it no longer works. Does anyone have the method to get the Dell (not HP) 720 printer to work in Windows 98?
