It worked!
Bless you my son. Your advice worked when nothing else did. I deleted all references to 'Roxio' out of my registry, uninstalled the device driver for my CD/DVD, rebooted, checked the device manager; and Wah-Lah, there it was; all nice and installed.
Much love to my fellow geeks out there that are willing to share their knowledge and experience to help out. You make the world a better place.

Thanks Vercetti for the original registry fix for this, it worked for me.
The corruption happened to me right after updating to iTunes 7. After I did the suggested registry fix and then re-opened iTunes, iTunes gave an error talking about how its registry settings have been modified. iTunes is now unable to burn CDs.
iTunes appears to be a system resource-monpolizing piece of software that doesn't like other things trying to access those same resources. Anyone have any suggestions as to how to resolve these iTunes/CD-DVD drive conflicts?
I went so far as installing a application virtualization program called "SVS" from Altiris that puts various programs in "layers" where they aren't actually hard installed into the registry, but instead connections into the registry are proxied and can be turned off when the program is not in use. That solved the above problem but then iTunes didn't seem to get along with SVS too well. Microsoft just acquired some technology (Softricity) that in theory does what SVS does and at some point this will be in the operating system, but not for at least 3 years.
I can't imagine I am the only one having this issue.

First off, I want to say thank you! The regedit worked, and I can use my cd-rom drive again.
wpritchard, I had the same problem with iTunes after I deleted the upper and lower filters from the registry. I just went into the control panel, clicked on add/remove programs, then selected iTunes. There is a repair button in there, and I selected that. It repaired everything, and the burner is now working fine for iTunes. I can't figure out how to get Windows Media Player to recognize my cd-burner though.

To delete the offending keys, open the Registry and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCl ass\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. . Delete the keys named UpperFilters and LowerFilters and reboot.

I have the problem too, now on both my home and work computers, but the regedit does not work here at work. It may work at home, because I was using a roxio product when it started last night.
I started using this computer last month, it was someone elses, and I don't know the history of the problem. Windows sees the CD drive, but it cannot read any, either data or music. I looked in the registry for the info to delete, but there was none in the part of the registry where it should be.
I used find in the registry and roxio is not in there at all
any other ideas out there?

Step 1
Click on START, Then Run, Then type in regedit

Click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Then Click on subfolder SYSTEM
3.
In subfolder SYSTEM click on CURRENT CONTROL SET
4.
Im CURRENT CONTROL SET subfolder click on control,
Then find the subfolder CLASS Expand class and look for the key :{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

I am having a similar problem here, in that my DVD drive will not play any DVD. A difference is that it is not even showing up in Device Manager. Any ideas on how to get it working again? I haven't tried deleting those "filter" files yet. Might that solution fix my problem as well?
Thanks for any help!

The regedit worked!!! However, I can no longer burn anything...it only reads. When I opened iTunes I had an error message similar to what wpritchard is receiving. It wants me to reinstall iTunes. Is this a simple driver fix? or is it much more??? HELP!!!!

download CDgone to your desktop. You will need winrar to extract the files, when you have done that double click on the folder and a window opens with 3 files.
cdgone
edit reg
read me first - helpful advice from the creator - credit to him
basically you right click on cd gone and then left click on merge ( vista asks if you want to go on, so yes you do )
when that task finishes right click on edit reg and left click on merge ( give permission to continue ) and thats it error 19 should have gone and the drives should work again.
I have to say this was the easiest cure I could find.
finally, may need to reboot the machine for the changes to take effect.
good luck
