Smile Vercetti fixed it

vercetti, I just wanted to say you rock man! I tryed what you said and when I rebooted all my problems where fixed.

I had installed in encrypted program called TrueCrypt and it caused my CD rom drive to dissappear along w/ my mounted drives. I tryed system restore on my the WIndows XP machine --- nothing worked. I tested the drive to make sure it wasn't bad using a boot disk. I even unistalled TrueCrypt but the errors just keep coming. Then I tryed Deleting UpperFilters and LowerFilters and reboot and everything was great again.
Thanks alot

To delete the offending keys, open the Registry and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCl ass\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. . Delete the keys named UpperFilters and LowerFilters and reboot.

In case anyone is curious, this fix also works in Windows Vista. I had the same issue and googled into here. In my case, I believe Nero Burning Rom caused the corrupt entry.

These filter drivers sometimes have problems that can cause the CD or DVD drive to stop working correctly. The device entry for the CD or DVD drive in the Device Manager may show up with an error descriptor that reads "The device could not start." Additionally, there may be an error message that reads "One of the filter drivers for this device is invalid." The devices themselves do not show up in Explorer. Error codes for the device include code 31, code 32, code 19 or code 39, and sometimes the even more ominous warning "Your registry might be corrupted" appears.

Several of the products made by Roxio are infamous for causing this problem, although in fairness to the company the most recent versions of their Roxio CD/DVD writing software (6.2 and higher) do not have these problems. Users of 5.0 or 6.0 editions of the Easy CD & DVD Creator product, which has been bundled with many new PCs in the past, should upgrade to 6.2 or better. Other programs can also cause this problem, with the same solution.

Note that after you do this, you may lose functionality in the program that uses the filter drivers, which may need to be reinstalled.

Thanks you very much, this did the trick straight away. I deleted the two filter entries from the registry, uninstalled the CD/DVD from the Device Manager rebooted. When the syetm started up it found the drive, installed the drivers and CD/DVD drive was visible again and working just fine. Thanks for the help.

I have this same problem. My computer says that the CD drive is working properly, but when I put a CD in it, as I'm trying to install a program on it, the disk starts to turn, but nothing happens at all. And when I go to the CD drive and click on it, it says I have ti insert a disk first. It's read CDs before with music, and with pictures. Now it won't read any and I would love it if someone would help me out before I put my foot through the damn thing. Hopefully SOMEBODY can help me with this, because I joined this site specifically to get help on this...

I dislike the fact that every time to go to a new page, this site logs me out and I have to log in again...

I registered just for the sake of thanking you vercetti.

My first problem I had was with my PC running a disk C: check with errors, which I fixed easily with the boot menu.
I was in a state of shock when I found none of my two DVD drives (one newly installed this morning) showing up, and I googled for help.

Behold, I came upon this divine post, which has saved me a lot of trouble!

I thank you, and in the future will point out to others this post if they are in need. Rock on, and thanks again!

Need help for a similar problem but more complex

Hi ,

I have a DVD/RW in my DELL inspiron 6400 laptop. I do not know if I was able burn DVD with it, but yes I could burn CDs. Earlier I used to be able to open both CDs and DVDs using that drive. But lately I am not able to play/browse DVD, nothing happens !!!!

Problem
=======
Under "My Computer" I see two drives, "DVD R/W (D: )" and "DVD (F: )", but I have only one drive.

When I put in a CD it comes up fine in D:, The drive recognizes the CD and it opens fine.

When I put in a DVD nothing happens, I just some periodic cluck sound and thats it.

When I right click "My Computer" -> Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> DVD/CD Drive I find there are 2 entires, one has "_NEC....DVD+-RW" this is the DVD drive and the other "DE....... CdRom drive". If I uninstall both the drivers and reboot the laptop both the drivers comeup again.

I do not know what the issue is. If I keep trying to Disable/Uninstall the drivers it works. I am not able to figure out what causes the DVD drive to work.

I HAVE NOT TRIED THE REGISTRY EDITTING PART I READ AS THIS STEP KONKED SOME OF THE SYSTEM THAT USED THIS PROCEDURE.

I have posted this in other issue. As I am not sure in what post it was I am posting it again. Sorry about that.

Regards

I registered just to say thank you vercetti, I deleted the registry key for the filters and yes as soon as I rebooted the system, popped in a dvd, and it was recognized and played. sending a bouquet to you!!!
and definately bookmarked this site. For those who do not know how to properly read and delete keys in the registry, please be careful and follow instructions carefully. But this suggestion worked like a charm.

vercetti you are truly awsome! I lost both my cd and dvd functionality and your advice restored it at once. Coincidentally, it also restored my floppy drive which hasn't worked for ages but since I no longer use it I never bothered about the problem. Thanks. For users not confident about messing around with the registry, I agree with jackiewilson about being careful when editing the registry. Thanks again vercetti.

man I owe you big time!!!! I did not want to reload Win just for a dumb mistake I had made I think now it was the DiscJuggler driver that I removed. I figured it would be alright to remove since it wasn't installed but..... now I learn

THANK YOU!!!!!

I did the regedit steps as mentioned earlier and now I can see both my dvd and cdr drives in My Computer, but they both appear as hard drives. Basically, i now see three drives, my C drive as always, and now my D and E drives show up. If i put a cd into either drive, it will not read. In my device manager, it still is showing the (Code 19) error for the cdr and dvd drives. Any ideas?
