If your using windows XP you are supposed to download a program
from Microsoft called'Download Guided Help' and run the 127kb
program. Did you do this?

It is 31460.exe go here-->http://www.sendspace.com/file/zwvjkj

When i run that 'Download Guided Help', I get an error that reads "Resolve CD access problem. The UpperFilters and LowerFilters registry values that can cause CD access problems do not exist on your computer. Click Help and Support on the Start menu for additional support options for this issue"

Any thoughts??

Do you have any way to try another optical drive=Cd-Rom DVD player etc....?

Fix for CD/DVD Problem

Quote:
Many third-party programs that control CD or DVD burning (as well as some player applications) install CD- or DVD-ROM filter device drivers into Windows. These filter drivers are meant to allow for low-level hooks into the hardware, to allow for functions such as packet writing (where a CD-R/W or DVD-/+RW can be written incrementally, like a hard disk).

These filter drivers sometimes have problems that can cause the CD or DVD drive to stop working correctly. The device entry for the CD or DVD drive in the Device Manager may show up with an error descriptor that reads "The device could not start." Additionally, there may be an error message that reads "One of the filter drivers for this device is invalid." The devices themselves do not show up in Explorer. Error codes for the device include code 31, code 32, code 19 or code 39, and sometimes the even more ominous warning "Your registry might be corrupted" appears.

Fixing the problem simply involves deleting the filter entries for the third-party device drivers. These entries can sometimes become damaged (which is what produces the "corrupt registry" warning).

To delete the offending keys, open the Registry and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCl ass\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. . Delete the keys named UpperFilters and LowerFilters and reboot.

Several of the products made by Roxio are infamous for causing this problem, although in fairness to the company the most recent versions of their Roxio CD/DVD writing software (6.2 and higher) do not have these problems. Users of 5.0 or 6.0 editions of the Easy CD & DVD Creator product, which has been bundled with many new PCs in the past, should upgrade to 6.2 or better. Other programs can also cause this problem, with the same solution.

Note that after you do this, you may lose functionality in the program that uses the filter drivers, which may need to be reinstalled.
I joined this forum to say thank you. If been struggling with this problem for two weeks. The fix above worked like a charm. Whew!!!

As originally posted by Vercetti:

open the Registry and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCl ass\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. . Delete the keys named UpperFilters and LowerFilters and reboot.

Worked like a charm. Thanks so much! BTW, I believe NERO 9 may have put this there, so I'll be looking for a patch from them. The "UPPERFILTERS" string directed the key to GEARAspiWDM, and I believe the Gear software is used by NERO. Deleted the UPPERFILTERS string and problem solved.

Thanks vercetti!!

My anti-virus software expired, and I couldn't load the CD, I had the corrupt registry warning and (Code 19).

All good now! ( I had to register just to thank you!)

I am having the same problems. Neither my cd or dvd will run. I am sure it was the drivers and now I can not reinstall any driver for either of them. When I put a CD into my cd drive it gives me the blue screen of death. I did an update awhile ago and it screwed up a few things on my computer. So I went in and uninstalled the ones I remembered that updated, but when I uninstall I must of uninstalled the old drivers also, cause wizard tells me they can not find any drivers for it. If I go to the manufactors page and get any drivers, they will not install. Should I try the fixes in this thread?

Thanks a million for the registry hack. I've been having this problem for a couple of weeks on my Sony notebook. Today is the first day I've been able to see and use the drive.
