CD Drive // DVD Drive Not Working!
My CD drive wont work. Yesterday I tried to play a CD in it, and nothing came up like it usually does. So I went into My Computer to click the icon and the icon wasnt even there. I went into Device Manager, and the error is: Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19) Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device. I went through troubleshoot, did everything it asked such as installing/reinstalling, BOIS and everything else but it is still not working. If you could help I would really appreciate it.
Its not just CDs also, its all disks.

Look for firmware at the manufacturer's website. Did you check in 'hardware' for problems? You can try reinstalling the driver there.
Right click on 'my computer' > properties > hardware > device manager > double click on your cdrom.

Yeah. Go to the manufacturers Website, and pick up a set of new firmware, or drivers for the drive, and then reinstall then over the old broken ones. Simple

Many third-party programs that control CD or DVD burning (as well as some player applications) install CD- or DVD-ROM filter device drivers into Windows. These filter drivers are meant to allow for low-level hooks into the hardware, to allow for functions such as packet writing (where a CD-R/W or DVD-/+RW can be written incrementally, like a hard disk).
These filter drivers sometimes have problems that can cause the CD or DVD drive to stop working correctly. The device entry for the CD or DVD drive in the Device Manager may show up with an error descriptor that reads "The device could not start." Additionally, there may be an error message that reads "One of the filter drivers for this device is invalid." The devices themselves do not show up in Explorer. Error codes for the device include code 31, code 32, code 19 or code 39, and sometimes the even more ominous warning "Your registry might be corrupted" appears.
Fixing the problem simply involves deleting the filter entries for the third-party device drivers. These entries can sometimes become damaged (which is what produces the "corrupt registry" warning).
To delete the offending keys, open the Registry and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlCl ass\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. . Delete the keys named UpperFilters and LowerFilters and reboot.
Several of the products made by Roxio are infamous for causing this problem, although in fairness to the company the most recent versions of their Roxio CD/DVD writing software (6.2 and higher) do not have these problems. Users of 5.0 or 6.0 editions of the Easy CD & DVD Creator product, which has been bundled with many new PCs in the past, should upgrade to 6.2 or better. Other programs can also cause this problem, with the same solution.
Note that after you do this, you may lose functionality in the program that uses the filter drivers, which may need to be reinstalled.

are there any other kinds of things that could've caused it other than the filters? i compared my registry entries in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\Scsi to those of my friend's (a friend with this exact same problem) and my entries seem to have a little more info (i.e. mine has DeviceName for both of my CD drives, yet neither of hers do)... and yes, this is affecting both her CD-ROM and CD-RW drives. Do you think that if I added the correct DeviceName entry that hers would function correctly again?

Just a suggestion, most errors people are getting, and aslong as they have an internet connection, i'd recommend doing a google search, you're gauranteed to get a better answer if no one on here knows it first I mean.
TBH, a lot of answers on here are excellent from poeple I have helped and the responses, people who want help, give great information about their problems that helps people with a bit more knowledge help others.

MSKB no good
Well, I've been combing the net for days, AND performed every step in every article Microsoft says will solve this problem- to no avail.
I've even swapped cdrw drives. No good.
All this removing, updating, regediting... does NOTHING. No cd drive, save for the yellow exclamation point in the device manager.
This is getting ridiculous. Add to the fact that I NEVER HAD ANY OF THE ROXIO software on this box.

Sddjd,
The regedit should fix the issue, when you deleted either uppper, lower, or both filters, restarted, the yellow exclamation mark should have fixed it.
If not, reinstall Windows.

Well, the KB fix didn't do it, but reinstalling windows was a step I was unwilling to take.
The ultimate fix ended up being searching the registry for "cd", "easy", and "roxio". There were a lot of entries (delete all with any reference to the roxio programs), but I think the prime suspect was one which existed with "easy" in its name. That one pointed to one of the files the KB noted to delete and "unreference" from the registry. Problem was that it was overruling the fix's edit.
Deleted all the additional garbage and the drive fired up beautifully.
Now, why couldn't the KB have included this info? I shudder to think how many users reformatted/reinstalled the OS and ALL their software, when in the end a ten minute fix (on TOP of the KB) was all it took...
