There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly. I think u r familiar with this problem. So here is the info from Belarc:
Operating System:
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (build 2600)
System Model:
Compaq Presario 061 DW265A-ABA SR1055C NA511 0n41411RE101KAME210
Enclosure Type: Desktop
Processor:

128 kilobyte primary memory cache
512 kilobyte secondary memory cache
Main Circuit Board
Board: ASUSTek Computer INC. Kamet2
Bus Clock: 166 megahertz
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies, LTD 3.08 02/04/2004
Multimedia:
Realtek AC'97 Audio for VIA (R) Audio Controller
USB Audio Device
VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP [Display adapter]
Samsung SyncMaster [Monitor] (15.2"vis, s/n H9KXA19934, October 2004)
Drivers:
217.45 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity

*sigh* More problems with sound.
Ok, for some reason out of the blue, I lost sound on my laptop, and can't explain it. I checked my sound card in Device Manager (SigmaTel C-Major Audio) and it says it's working fine. Under further inspection of it's properties, it says that the Driver is enabled, but has not been started.
Under Sounds and Audio Devices in the Control Panel, everything is greyed out, and it says there is No Audio Device.
Now, I have tried everything I could think of, reinstalling my audio driver multiple times, and can't seem to figure anything out. I'm not new with computers, but I guess this is just beyond me. I don't believe it's my speakers, because the laptop's only a couple years old, and I've never had any problems whatsoever with them. I ran that Belarc Advisor, so here's what it came up with (hope this is the right info):
Operating System
Windows XP Media Center Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600)

First check this
Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Properties / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.
If your radio plugs are near your USB sockets then you have Realtek ALC655 on-board audio. Go here http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false
download the (Executable file) save to desktop, double click to install
SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE INSTALLING JUST IN CASE
Hope this helps

Hey Barbara,
Thanks for the quick response, though sadly, none of it seemed to work for me. Stupid thing is still saying the same things - No Audio Device under the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties, and that the Driver is enabled but has not been started in the SigmaTel C-Major Audio Properties in the Device Manager.
Sorry for the bother, but do ya happen to have any other ideas of what to do, or who to go to?
Thanks again for all your help, it's really much appreatiated.

Check this out

Go here to HP http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...o duct=404613
under Original drivers, get the Chipset driver. install, then Restart the comp then install audio again

Check if sound is enabled in the BIOS, look at this, it is to Disable sound, but it shows how to, use it to check if sound is enabled http://support.euro.dell.com/support...9&l=en &s=gen
