Ok go back to the site and download the Utility and see what it comes up with, I think you may need the chipset driver. don't download the BIOS update.
What make and model is your computer.

Hope this helps

Can you check Device Manager for sound, is a yellow ! or ? mark shown.
Start/ Control Panel / double click System / choose Hardware tab / choose Device Manager / Expand Sound, video and game controllers / right click C-Media AC'97 / choose Update Driver / choose radio button Yes, this time only / click Next / leave Install the software automatically ( Recommended ) / click Next

Create a System Restore Point before you change anything in Services.

Ok, I'm not up on services but this is how you get there Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / double click Services / For information on Useing Services click Help on the Action menue in Services. Your list of Services will come up scroll down to Windows Audio and check if Started if not right click and select Start

Hope this helps

grrrr

Ok i checked device manager, there are 2 programs with a yellow question mark and that is the "Multimedia Controller" & "Multimedia Video Cotroller" however when i try to install these, it says hardware not installed becuase the wizard cannot find the neccasary software (Code 28).

Anyway back to your original question, when i right-click Realtek AC'97 Audio for VIA (R) Audio Controller (to quote it's full name) and tell it to install automatically it tells me the wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed.

Oh and i went to services, but it looks like my windows audio was started already.

I'm proper lost, i wonder if i should go into BIOS and do something, but i'm not sure wot?? Thanx 4 your help, it's definately needed.

any help is appreciated...as long as it's right!

yes of course i appreciate any help that you can give me. Services is wot bookworm told me to go to, to see if my windows audio was started. That qoute was exactly wot the windows install wizard told me when i tried to update my Realtek AC'97 Audio for VIA (R) Audio Controller.

You mentioned a motherboard cd, i'm not sure wot that is, but i do have a creative soundblaster live! 1024 cd. Which was the 1st thing i tried when my sound stopped working. Look i'm totally lost right now, and i'm not the most computer literate person, so be easy wiv me

Well first of all, i have WXP so i probably won't need vxd. Secondly, i went to sound but i can't play any of the system sounds and place volume icon in the taskbar is greyed out. It says there is no audio device.

"Do a Creative Sound test,do a dxdiag sound test."

i have no idea how to do either one.

And i have no idea how i get to creative diagnostics.

):

Yea i re-installed creative and i found creative diagnostics, i went to it and it told me "Your audio drivers have not been installed properly. Please re-install your audio drivers before running creative diagnostics again."

I'm not sure wot a quick install guide is?

Sorry for making this into a long issue, but u have to understand i'm going crazy without my sounds, no music and no games = no fun.

And btw i only joined this disscussion on #72

Well mine isn't quite in a box u see, it's actually just a cd wiv creative soundblaster live! 1024 written on it, i'm not sure where i got it from but i only recently installed it onto the pc. Before that my sound was working fine, then all of a sudden my sound stopped working and so i decided to try and install it and it's given me all this crap like audio hq ect.

I know if u were here in the flesh u would probably already have fixed it by now, but unfortunately my dopey self can't seem to do it, i don't understand wot i'm doing wrong??
