Thank you very much for the reply. I tried the driver but still got this message when opening windows Media Player: Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.

I went to the Intel support site where you can test a board for their drivers and that was a dead end, maybe because eMachines provides a modified solution? eMachines doesn't have the drivers. I tried a couple of commercial download sites with no success.

I think the driver originally installed was an Avance AC97 driver, but the only Avance driver I could find was for an HP computer and it didn't work.

which eMachine model do you have ?

check this to see is Realtek is default audio

Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device

I found a disk from another eMachine and rolled the dice and installed the audio driver from that - it worked!

I don't see the xp option anywhere. I only have a menu but those options you say are not there
