Missing PCI Device for HP t860 - no sound after reinstallation of XP

Hi all - I'm new here, Pal Cabral's the name.

I live for the time in Belgium and bought a Pavilion t860.be pre-installed with XP Home in french. Natuarally I re-installed with XP pro in a language I actually speak (english) but after installation my sound disappaired. Unfortunately I never made a recovery disc of the original OS (becuase the instructions were in french - my fault of course)

After downloading just about all I could get my hands on on the HP and Intel websites I still have the problem with no sound, and in the device manager there is on "Other Devices" with yellow quesitonmark: "PCI Device".

Now I reckon this is the reason why I can't hear anything. In dxdiag it says I have no sound card and if I open Volume Control it tells me there are no active mixer device available. Sounds familair to anyone?

System Model is PS205AA-B14, Pentium 4 540, 3,2 Ghz
Chipset is IntelŽ 915P Express
Video card is NVIDIA GeForce 6600, chipset GeForce 6600
Internal sound is IntelŽ High Definition Audio 7.1

All of this according to HP, but calling them they were not very helpful and quite secretive. One guy gave me a part number of the motherboard I should be looking for and it was PTGD1-LA, but searching for this on the web gave me nothing sustainable.

Anyone have ideas what I should be looking for? I am really stuck here so I really appreciate some ideas what to do next.

We need to know the motherboard, HP have OEM motherboards and everyone has this problem, It's probulary AC/97 but to make sure get Belarc Advisor here http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html (free programe) install and run, print and then look for the motherboard. It's should be under Main Circuit Board. from that we can identify the Sound card.
Hope this helps.

Installed XP - no sound (Possible FIX)

I found it!
I had recently reformatted the HD and installed XP Pro w/SP2 resulting in NO SOUND from onboard C-Media AC97 which uses CMI8738 xp driver w/no conflicts. The fix was to disable mobo onchip USB in the BIOS.
...go figure!
