AC97 Sound Card problem - incorrect drivers???
Hi, I recently bought a motherboard off a friend of mine who has built me a system, I have installed XP Pro SP2 on it and everything works fine...except the on-board soundcard. I have installed plenty of drivers which XP seems to think work fine but there is no sound at all being output to the speakers.
I have read a ton of posts in this forum regarding problems with AC97 soundcards, and I have tried a lot of different drivers - Realtek, C-Media, nothing seems to work. I've done google searches, basically I can't figure out what to do next - I'm sure its not a hardware problem. It's enabled in the BIOS (and its definately an AC97 as it says so in the bios), volume controls are all up to full, I'm sure its just a matter of finding the right driver.
I have typed in the motherboard type (ms6526) and found a site which listed all the drivers for it (realtek), I have tried these drivers and had no luck - still no sound.
Anyway, its a Elonex branded motherboard/bios if that helps, here's the Belarc stats, I would really, really appreciate it if someone could work their magic and help me out with the correct driver....

I just downloaded Everest to try to figure out exactly what sort of motherboard I had etc, here's the relevant info - again I tried using Avance drivers but had no success.

Thanks so much for your help Bookworm, unfortunately that didn't work either...made a system restore point, installed the drivers using the setup file and no sound, then went back to the system restore point and tried manually updating the device driver through the control panel...and no sound.
I read in another thread that someone had a similar problem and they solved it by turning off the on-chipset USB or something, I don't have that option in the BIOS though.
If anyone has any other ideas I'd really appreciate it...

Don't know if you have resolved but look here at MSI liveupdate it will check your drivers for you. one other point you have to update the chipset before the audio driver will load http://www.msi.com.tw/program/suppor...UID=671&kind=1

If this system has just been assembled (you did say that you bought it from your friend) and you have just installed your operating system, Did you remember to install the "Chipset drivers" before installing the sound card drivers? The sound will not work with out them.

I have a separate sound card not onboard...i've probably tried every sound driver available..please help
Whenever i install an AC'97 driver, it gives me the windows logo message and the blue screen appears (if i "continue anyway"). i have to then uninstall the driver.
My system crashed. Lost my driver CDs; Everest gives me:

Sorry to reply AGAIN but that link i sent you and the driver WILL DEFINATLY work. and if it doesnt you have MAJOR problems with your computer (motherboard) so i would suggest to take it to a computer shop but that link WILL work i promise you. Jake. (13 years old :P)

Realtek AC'97 is the driver for onboard sound, not a sound card, if your radio jacks are situated near your mouse and keyboard sockets you have onboard sound, if they are lower down the tower in an exspansion slot then you have a sound card ( you will need to find the make and model of the card to get the right drivers )
If the radio jacks are at the top, then the onboard sound is Soundmax, this is the link to your Intel Board http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...4&submit=Go%21
you will find the audio driver there.
Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case

Before Barb's driver try the AC'97 Driver i sent you first.... Then barbs..
And by setting a system restore point before downloading the driver wont do anything BECAUSE you dont "lose" info/things you have downloaded. so if you created a system restore point then it doesnt work and you restore back. the driver will still be there. But the driver i sent you will work, if not like i said.. its the motherboard (Uh Oh :S) so id go to a professional shop

pfff i have been searching for a solution all day.
i have a AD77 infinity KT400 chipset motherboard. I did a format C today and installed xp with sp2 integrated. Everything seemed to work fine,... . until i tried to play a song, so i went to see in the device manager.
There i found a questionmark before multimedia audio controller.
I've tried installing realtek AC'97 from the official wesite, doesn't seem to work
i can't seem to find a solution.
can anyone help me ?
