My problem is the BIOS does not have an advanced option and nowhere in the tabs menus is any reference to enabling the sound.

I have checked and rechecked but there is definitely no option to be found

Any Ideas?

Had a look at Ei Systems and 2 types of BIOS used Americam Megatrands Inc and Insyde, to access AMI you hit Del key Insyde the F2 key. Now i have AMI on one of my machines (retail board) and onboard sounds is listed under Features, but they have most likley been altered by EI systems, The Support site is The TechGuys ( can't post the link )

send an email requesting assistance ia enabeling onboard sound.

hope this helps

Thanks for your help. The BIOS is AMI version 1.08 dated 10/13/2003. I looked at Techguys and there is a lot of info but nothing downloadable apart from whitepapers.
Do you think if I updated my BIOS it might help?

When I first had the HD problem and reformatted the disk it hung on self test reporting bad sectors. I tried everything I knew and guessed the HD was finished. I was able to borrow a HD from a friends defunk laptop and installed this in my EI Systems machine. The new disk was not found and there was a squealing from the speakers. So I reinstalled my old HDD and
used Ultimate Boot Disk to format as new drive using MAXTORs install program. By disabling SMART i was able to reinstal windows and all my drivers except the AC97 codec combo (WDM). As previously mentioned I know the driver ı have is correct as it worked fine before by the way it is version 6.14.1.4100. I wonder if the squealing I heard may have damaged the bios somehow. If I use device manager to install the ac97 driver it installs but reports code 10

Any ideas

Hi
I tried Techguys but there isnt anything downloadable for me there. My BIOS is AMI version 1.8. I know the driver is correct as it worked fine before the format. In any case here are some everest reports for the machine.
Northbridge –Gi845GEV
Southbridge- Intel 82801DB ICH4
Revision/Stepping- 82/B0
CPU- Intel Celeron 2600 Mhz(26x100)
BIOS- AMI 10/13/03
Operating System- Windows XP Professional

Not sure what else you need but I know you can fix this. If I install the drivers using device manager/update drivers for the onboard sound then they install ok but report code 10 device not working.

Looking forward to your reply

Jamie

code 10 means device could not start, go to Device Manager, highlight the sound driver, right click and select Update driver

Hi Barbara

I have tried to update the driver using device manager/update driver but it reports there is no driver information suitable for your hardware here when I try to install the version I know to be correct ie. 6.14.1.4100

Would it help if I started a new thread and posted the report from Belarc or Everest?

What model do you have, post the Belarc then we can be sure.

Hi Barbara

I installed the driver and got the usual code 10 report

I even reformatted the drive again and reinstalled everything but the same code 10 for the sound.

Any further ideas

Question

Hi Barbara

It is not a tower it is a notebook. EI Systems model 4419
15.1" TFT Celeron 2.60ghz 250mb 40gb combo

It is made by dixons and sold through PC world

The techguys website does not have the sound drivers for this model for download but what puzzles me is the drivers worked fine before the HDD format?

Jamie,

To reinstall drivers on your machine varies, how did you format it? did you use the in built recovery program?

Look at the bottom of the screen for instructions on reinstalling software.

But if you wiped your system using an XP CD and not the computers recovery program it won't work.

No drivers offered by EI Systems, but it has the Via AC'97 Audio codec, this is a shot in the dark. Go here to Via and install the audio driver they offer http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx...SubCatID =104

all instructions to install are on the site

Hope this helps

I used an XP CD to wipe the drive clean so any recovery disks are not applicable. The strange thing is the first format was ok and the sound driver went in ok, but when I installed the modem drivers the system crashed with the blue screen.
However the system would not recover even using F8 so I reformatted again. İt was this time the sound driver refused to work although the modem now works fine.
I have since formatted a third time and following install of the new XP pro the first thing I dis was to install the on board sound drivers, but I am getting code 10 failed to load device.

Driving me nuts but I have a 2nd notebook which is used for work, so the problem is not urgent. The EI system notebook will be, when it is fully working again, become my wifes home computer.

Any help appreciated

Jamie

Hi Barbara

I already downloaded the Via Ac97 drivers from Techguys website but suprise suprise same result code 10. I wonder is it possible through some glitch that actual onboard sound device isnt AC97 and thus causing the problem.
When I format and load a fresh install of XP pro but before I install any drivers, if I look in device drivers through control panel there is a yellow warning flag alongside 'multimedia audio device' with no reference to any specific soundcard. Then if I click update driver and point to the AC97 driver I had before which was working fine when it installs I get the code 10 error.

I have since tried about 10 different versions of the AC97 WDM codec combo driver which I have acquired from the internet but every one gives code 10
I even tried in desperation to load a realtek ac97 driver but had same response code 10

If this was a tower I could easily just buy and install a new soundcard and driver but being a notebook that option is not applicable

Jamie
