Sony Vaio VGN-S260

audio driver - ADI® SoundMAX® Audio Device Driver will not install directly as it shows up as unsupported according to the installation prompt.

Currently a Soundmax driver (substitute that I found) is installed however no sound is available, via speakers nor through headphone output/sound out. Attempting to install a Realtek AC 97 fails due to hardware issues (blue screen) while installing the alcxwdm.sys file during driver installation.

Any ideas what may be the cause would be deeply appriated. Am new to this forum, please let me know if any further information is required.

Thank you members for any assistance.

Thanks for the advice Barbara,

Sadly, from the get go all I get from the chipset utility is:

'This update is not intended for use with your computer model'

I've also obtained the same with the sound drivers, as well as the shared sony library download files...in fact any type of drivers that are from the sony site i specified will not install do that the prompt i mentioned above.

Any ideas how to extract something from an executable to perform a 'force installation' of sorts??

Am very close to just reformat and reinstalling the operating system, perhaps running windows 2000 to provide the laptop with full capabilities.

This is quite odd that none of the 'original drivers' off the sony site recognize the laptop as the intended computer model despite the fact that they all should be.

Very interesting issue, any further ideas are appreciated.
Thank you

You could use the download taxi and get all the drivers and put in one folder, then use Device Manager to install,

get Everest and look at My Computer Summary section, post if need be, Chipset should be Intel 855PM, Look under multimedia windows audio, it should show the audio drivers.

Look at this from Sony on installing your own OS

C. Installing Sony Drivers and Windows Updates

Before installing VAIO® applications, you must install or update certain drivers on your computer because Windows XP does not include many of Sony VAIO® drivers. Follow the steps below to install or update the necessary drivers.

1. Browse to the folder where you stored the driver updates that you downloaded from the Sony Support Web site (refer to the "Before Installing" section, above). If you burned the drivers to a CD, insert the CD, and browse to the drivers on the CD.
2. Install the driver packages.

CAUTION: You must install the driver packages in the following order for your computer to operate normally:

1. BIOS update (if available)
2. Intel® Chipset (if applicable)
3. Microsoft KB896256 (Mobile Dual Core) (only available on some models, please verify with Sony Support web site http://www.sony.com/pcsupport)
4. Microsoft KB909667 (System stops responding during standby, hibernate or shutdown.) (only available on some models, please verify with Sony Support web site http://www.sony.com/pcsupport)
5. Sony Notebook Control (if applicable)
6. Sony Programmable I/O (if applicable)
7. Sony Shared Library
8. Video
NOTE: On some newer VAIO PC models, the system will support two different graphics hardware. The setting mode is identified as:
1. Stamina: Intel Graphic mode
2. Speed: Nvidia® Graphic mode
9. Audio

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu...eType=Original

Check these

Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Properties / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply > click Start > Reboot.

What country was the notebook purchased from, and what Serial Number does it show on bottom, wonering if it is the right model.

Hope this helps

I also wanted to add if you could help me find some video drivers. I have tried to play a few games and when I go to the setup menu for them they show no display sizes for me to choose such as 800x600 and etc. those fields are left blank. If you could Help I would really appreciate it thank you very much.

drivers listed for XP only, not Win 2K,the drivers needed would be the Chipset driver ( you need to restart after installation) then the audio driver

Ok I have this problem. Sorry on my english. I'm not so well in speaking this language. Greetings from Croatia.

Also I have problems with my diskette drive. When I put in a diskette windows says that I must insert the diskette. I replaced the diskette drive and tried with other diskettes. But problem remains the same.
